Wine Cellar
Clients needs: A growing wine collection has left them with a need for a small wine cellar. After discussing a few options, it's been decided that a closet in their family room will give them the space needed.
This new location will also allow them to display their collection and access it easily when entertaining. Ample lighting will be needed to high light the display racks and the cherry wood that will be used to fabricate this 500 bottle wine cellar. In addition a glass door with side lights will replace the current solid door. The entrance into the cellar will also be of cherry and will consist of fluted pilasters and custom crown moldings. Finally a humidification system will be added to the closet to maintain the proper climate.
What needs to be done to the closet: The closet can not be made any larger, so two cellar walls will receive wine racking from floor to ceiling. This will provide room for more than 500 bottles of wine, while displaying them in a beautiful setting. Can-lighting will be added to the cellar to help showcase the wine and woodwork. At the back of the closet the humidification system will be out of sight near the floor and under the racking. To help make the wine cellar feel larger than it is; the addition of glass side lights on both sides of the glass door will allow guests to views nearly the entire cellar from the outside. This feature will require removing drywall on both sides of the closet doorway. Because the family room is hardwood flooring already the closet is the same and will be protected during construction and cleaned in the end.
Construction: Making a larger entry to the cellar is the first step. New lighting and wiring for the humidification system are installed. Once these items are done, any dry wall that needs repair is done so and allowed to dry. The walls are painted and fabrication of the wine racks, crown molding, and other custom woodwork takes place off site at the shop. The wine racking can then be installed before the glass side lights and door are put into place. Finally the custom woodwork around the door surround is installed on both the inside and outside, while crown molding finishes the detail inside the cellar.
